Epaphras, who is one of you, a servant of Christ Jesus, greets you, always struggling on your behalf in his prayers, that you may stand mature and fully assured in all the will of God. Colossians 4:12
I never asked to be an intercessor. My mom and dad just said prayers every night with us. They were never elaborate. It was usually an Our Father and God Bless so-and-so. But that habit stuck and I continued praying for my family as I grew up.
When I started going to church as an adult, I was introduced to the old ladies who prayed weird. Weird to me at that time was praying out loud. My first encounter with praying in a group was in a small gathering of four of us. I was brand new to the church, 19 years old, the next person up was around 68 or so. I had shared that I had some items stolen from the shop where I sold my wood working – about $300 worth. One of the women prayed kindly for the repentance of the person who stole it to return all to me and that the Lord would return to me three time what they had taken. Inside I did my usual, “yeah, right,” and went on listening. I was not about to open my mouth. With in the next couple of weeks I had received three separate amounts of about $300 each! I won a call in contest, a gift from a family member who won the lottery and wanted to share it, and one other thing I can’t recall right now. Yep, God got my attention. How did that happen?
I wanted to know more. And that’s how it all started. I became dear friends with the woman who first prayed for my situation. I’ll never forget Lynne Higgens, how she prayed for me without even know me that well and I’ll never forget how God answered those prayers. I learned to pray from all the old ladies at that church and many more men and women of God that He brought into my life.
I’m no expert in intercession. But I will share what I have learned and new things I encounter. There are many prayer warriors to learn from.
Personally, I love to pray for the Tampa Bay region where I live. It’s the area God has called me to right now. Eventually, you will also have opportunities to join me in those prayers in different venues. But, for now, enjoy the posts about intercession.
