Gardening

I’ve always been interested in gardening. Never particularly good at it, but always into it. I’ve tried to gardening in Denver and then in Chicago with limited success. I was learning a little. But, my husband and I recently moved to Florida. Anything I knew about gardening in Chicago was lost in the move. In Florida seasons are different, soil is different, heat and humidity are deferent! I’m starting over from scratch.

Come with me on this journey of learning to garden in Florida. Feel free to laugh with me. And if you have any good gardening wisdom, please leave a comment! I can use the help.

This Week in the Garden and Around the House

Garden This week was finally planting week. I thought I missed it and was lat once again. But, I was glad to hear from the guy at Kerby's that since it's been so hot, I haven't missed it. In fact, he said that, depending on the heat, he will wait unit mid-October to the end […]

This Week in the Garden

I haven't posted about my garden. It's not because there hasn't been anything going on. In fact, just the opposite. Things have been busy! I've been building a new garden frame, visiting a friend's garden and a community garden and set up a new caterpillar nursery. :) Building a New Frame Remember way back when […]

This Week in the Garden and Around the House

This is a great time of year around Florida. The weather is so mild and just perfect for getting outside. It's why we live in Florida! My favorite time to get out is in the morning when everything is just waking up. At this time of year everything outside picks up in activity—birds, squirrels and even […]

Backyard Chickens

Today I went to the First Annual Small Flock Poultry Conference. Sounds fancy! It was an all day chicken class :) I would love to have chickens and we now have the space. But I don't know a thing about them. There are several people I can go to for help who have chickens of their own. […]

This Week in the Garden

It's been a while since I gave a garden update. But really there hasn't been much going on other than keeping my okra alive. But, over all, it's been a good summer. The Raised Bed   Backyard Bounty   Always More

This Week in the Garden

Oh my, I haven't written in so long. Hurricane Hermine came through and knocked us out for a time. After that it was catch up. But I'm back! Hurricane Hermine As the hurricane blew through, it knocked down part of a tree that had rotted. Unfortunately, it took down our power line too. So for […]

This Week in the Garden

Yard work continues to keep me busy with summer weeding and trimming. There's not too much. But it seems that something always needs to be pulled or cut back out there. I have to laugh. I didn't cut back the butterfly bushes enough in February. Now they are so out of control with their long […]

This Week in the Garden

Even though there is not much new in the garden, there is so much going on. We always have our fair share of visitors—lizards, birds and squirrels and the like. But this week one ventured a little closer than usual. Pineapple Tour This year it's been a bumper crop for our pineapple.  We have a […]

This Week in the Summer Garden

There's not much going on right now in the garden. In Florida, I'm getting the feeling that summer is our winter. It's too dang hot for your vegetables and all to grow. A friend of mine did sent me a very helpful link to a Florida Gardening Guide. It's for the University of Florida's Extension Office. […]
